About this rug

Rows of rectangular cartouches on this charming rug each hold a small inner motif. Red fills the field, where rows of handsome rectangular cartouches in cream and red each hold a small inner motif. The drawing repeats across the face as an all-over grid of geometric panels rather than a single medallion. A narrow near-black edge runs to the perimeter without a separate main border or guard stripes. Pale patches mark places where the pile has worn low across the field. It brings deep red and cream into a small space without crowding it. At 2'8" by 4'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ferdos rugs

Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, described Khorasan as almost entirely desert, with its small towns and villages set in scattered oases. He traced the variety of its patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. Ferdos is in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. This rug repeats its panels in straight lines and boxed shapes. The red ground holds the cream panels in a steady grid across the whole face.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
