About this rug

Rows of stepped medallions with dark brown centers repeat on this charming rug. Rows of stepped medallions repeat across the deep red ground, outlined in cream with dark brown centers. The all-over plan fills the length, with small diamond motifs between them and no single center to anchor the eye. A handsome dark brown main border holds small geometric figures in cream, edged by a thin cream guard stripe. A few patches have thinned across the face, where white specks appear in the weave. It suits a narrow floor, letting the warm red and brown geometry settle. At 2'11" by 5', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Ferdos rugs

Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. The Herat carpets are the classic carpets of Khorasan, and pieces in the herati pattern survive from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Ferdos lies in the Khorasan region of eastern Persia, in the same weaving belt as Birjand and Mashhad. This piece fills the length with rows of repeating stepped forms. The drawing is strictly geometric, setting brown shapes against a rich red ground without any blue.

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
