This lovely rug holds a grid of octagonal guls with cream and near-black drawing. Rows of splendid octagonal guls repeat in a grid across the deep red field, each carrying cream and near-black drawing. Small square motifs with checkered centers rest among the larger shapes, joined by near-black lines. The main border is deep red, carrying small geometric blossoms in cream and dark brown. A few patches across the center have worn low, and the foundation shows as white specks. It holds a warm red note in a tight spot, with the cream accents lightening the deep ground. At 3'1" by 5'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ferdos rugs
Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, traced the variety of Khorasan patterns partly to weavers copying the rugs that pilgrims brought to Mashhad from other provinces. In eastern Persia’s Khorasan region, Ferdos shares a weaving belt with Birjand and Mashhad. Its rugs tend toward the curvilinear drawing of eastern Persia, with repeating floral fields instead of one dominant medallion, on a palette of madder red and indigo. This rug keeps the repeating field and the red ground, but the drawing is geometric rather than floral. The octagonal guls and square motifs form a strict lattice down the length, set off in cream on the red.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
