About this rug

Stepped octagonal guls in cream and dark red run down this lovely rug. At the center, a column of handsome stepped octagonal guls runs down the burgundy field, each tribal emblem worked in cream and dark red. There is no single focal point, only this repeating grid set against the deep ground. The main border is rust, carrying rows of small diamond shapes in cream and near-black. Several narrow bands of tiny geometric motifs surround the field. A light antique wash softened the colors without reaching the drawing. Wear has taken the pile low down the middle, with foundation visible where the red reads paler. It brings a warm, earthy weight to a tight hallway. At 2'11" by 5'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The reds of Turkmen weaving came from madder root, and each tribe had its own gul. Tekke rugs are the most easily identified of the Turkmen, because the quartered gul of their larger carpets became something of a trademark and was often copied elsewhere. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This rug keeps that strict grid of octagonal figures down its length. The palette moves between rust and brick as you cross the room, holding the deep warmth of the region.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
