About this rug

This charming rug has two large medallions in red on a burgundy field. Over a burgundy field, two large medallions in red anchor the center, each containing a dark brown geometric cross and small orange blossoms. Gray-green panels at the top and bottom carry orange stepped drawing, and bright orange triangles sit beside the center pointing inward. The main border is dark brown, carrying a chain of pale stepped hooks and geometric figures. The pile is worn low across much of the face, and the foundation shows through in the darker zones. It holds a warm, earthy weight in a tight area, the bright orange accents lifting the deep ground. At 3'3" by 5'1", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Bakhtiari rugs

The Bakhtiari are divided into two main groups, the Chahar Lang, or Four Legs, and the Haft Lang, or Seven Legs. In 1909 Bakhtiari tribesmen under the chief Sardar Assad captured Tehran in a successful campaign for constitutional reform. Bakhtiari rugs come from the Zagros mountains of western Persia, woven by tribal families for their own use. This rug keeps that tribal directness, setting its medallions and stepped panels in a bold, uncrowded layout. The dark brown border frames the interior with a steady rhythm of angular shapes. The bright orange against the burgundy ground gives the rug sharp definition.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
