About this rug

A dense herati lattice in a cream panel makes this a remarkable rug. At the center, a dense herati lattice of red, navy and steel blue fills a cream panel set into a deep red field. The octagon holds rows of rosettes and boteh shapes, framed by a serrated edge. Handsome deep red spandrels occupy the four corners, each holding a single small floral spray. The main border is burgundy, carrying a chain of rosettes and small blossoms in cream and blue. Narrow guard stripes flank the wide band. Dense, even pile runs through the center and the borders. It anchors a small space, and the cream center lightens the heavy reds. At 2'9" by 4'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Hamedan was the capital of the Seljuq sultans for 50 years, from the second half of the 12th century. It is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This accent rug keeps the dense drawing and strong red ground found in those longer pieces. Its layout places a busy cream lattice inside a broad red frame, balancing the red and navy motifs with open color at the corners.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
