Octagonal guls in dark brown and cream repeat in rows on this charming rug. Set on a deep red field, rows of beautiful octagonal guls repeat in dark brown and cream, with smaller cross-shaped motifs between them. The field has no central medallion, only this strict grid of tribal emblems worked over the entire rug, with the guls reaching the border on every side. A narrow border carries a small zigzag line in cream and black. Tiny white flecks mark a few patches where the foundation peeks through the red ground. It holds a warm red note in a small space without taking over. At 2'9" by 4'3", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
A Yomud main carpet of the mid-1850s at the Cleveland Museum of Art has an aubergine ground, and the decorated skirts at each end are its rarest feature. A main carpet was the prized possession of the round Turkmen tent. Weavers in the Torkaman tradition of northeastern Persia favor a repeating gul grid in which each figure closely echoes the last. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. Here the same octagonal figure sits in even columns down the length. The deep red ground stays close to one warmth, shifting only slightly between the open field and the darker brown of the motifs.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
