About this rug

Two columns of stepped cross motifs run the length of this lovely rug. On a deep red field, two columns of stepped cross motifs in cream and dark brown run the length, with smaller dark brown geometric figures spaced between them. The field is an all-over repeat with no central medallion. A handsome deep red main border carries a chain of diamond shapes picked out in orange, cream and near-black. Narrow guard stripes frame the border on both sides. A few patches across the center have thinned, and pale spots show against the red ground. Cream crosses stand out against the deep red field of this warm accent. At 2'6" by 3'5", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that small format and the repeating geometric vocabulary, with the stepped crosses and diamond border set from a limited set of shapes. The deep red field and border hold a saturated palette, while the cream crosses give the drawing its definition.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
