About this rug

Navy diamonds in a central column stand on the dark brown field of this amazing rug. Rows of cream hooked motifs flank a central column of navy diamonds on the dark brown field, punctuated by small deep red accents. There is no single medallion, only this vertical arrangement of geometric forms running the length of the rug. The wide border is black cherry, carrying a repeat of small cream and red crosses. Narrow guard stripes with tiny red and cream teeth frame the field on every side. The pile is full over the whole piece, so the geometric lines stay sharp. The dense, deep brown palette gives a small space a heavy, grounded warmth. At 2'9" by 3'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The Salor, Tekke, Yomut and Ersari tribes each wove a recognizable variety of the Turkmen design. Each Turkmen tribe had its own main gul, its most important symbol, and the flag of Turkmenistan shows the five guls of the five main tribes. In northeastern Persia, Turkmen weavers keep to a strict grid of gul motifs, the same octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. That sounds austere, yet it is the opposite, because the drawing never changes and all the life is in the color. This piece keeps that strict repetition in its columns of hooked shapes and central diamonds. The dark brown ground holds the cream and navy in a steady, rhythmic pattern that shifts as you move past it.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
