Three stepped diamond medallions in red and cream run down this wonderful rug. Set within a brown field, three stepped diamond medallions run down the center in red and cream. Small motifs float in the open space between the medallions. The gorgeous main border is cream, carrying a row of triangles in red, teal and charcoal. Narrow guard stripes with pink and near-black checks run along both edges of the border. Full pile covers the rug and keeps the outlines crisp. It suits a compact spot, bringing earthy brown and bright pink accents together. At 2'5" by 3'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Ardabil rugs
The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. This rug keeps that stepped outline in its three central diamonds and the triangular border. The brown ground sets off the red and cream shapes, forming a distinct layout inside the compact dimensions.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
