About this rug

A near-black hexagon sits between serrated blue shapes on this lovely rug. On a deep red field, three large medallions stack down the length of the runner. The middle one is a near-black hexagon holding red rosettes around a small central motif, while the top and bottom figures are serrated blue shapes. Small blue boxed motifs float in the open red space between the main figures. The main border is faded red, carrying delicate blue scrolling lines and small rosettes in cream and tan. A narrow orange guard stripe runs inside the border on both sides. Pile has thinned in spots across the field and the middle shape, where the weave shows through as pale specks. It suits a long passage, letting the strong red and blue settle the space. At 3'10" by 8'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kordi rugs

Kordi means Kurdish weaving, and it is a way of working rather than a single place. In the 17th century Shah Abbas I resettled Zafaranlu Kurds in Ghoochan, in northeastern Persia, to guard the frontier. Older Kurdish rugs of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, among them garden carpets and the harshang design, are known for their exuberant colors. Kurdish weavers across western Persia and into Khorasan share a preference for geometric drawing. This runner shows that preference in its stacked medallions and the small boxed motifs between them. The blue scrolls of the border echo the blue shapes at either end.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
