Rows of geometric medallions repeat in gray across this charming runner. Over a gray beige field, rows of geometric medallions repeat in gray, linked by stepped lattice lines. No single center holds the eye, only a continuous arrangement of tribal shapes covering the entire surface. A beautiful gray brown border carries a sharp zigzag line, flanked by narrow guard stripes. The pile is full from end to end, and a light antique wash has softened the colors without reaching the drawing. Laid in a passage, the muted earth tones stay plain underfoot. At 2'8" by 6', it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
Britannica notes that the better Baluch rugs are usually ascribed to Khorasan, and that they show little relationship to the Turkmen weaving they are often grouped with. A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that repeating structure, filling the ground with columns of geometric figures instead of one dominant center. The palette here rests on soft gray beige and gray.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
