Dark red diamonds in a dense lattice cover this charming rug. A dense lattice of dark red diamonds covers the beige field, each holding a small cross-shaped flower. No single shape anchors the center, as the design repeats from edge to edge in an all-over grid. The drawing runs straight into the corners without separate pieces to break the layout. A wide border in burgundy carries rows of small geometric forms along the perimeter. Narrow stripes in near-black and deep red flank this outer band on either side. The pile has thinned in a few patches, and white specks show where the weave sits low. It holds the warm red and near-black tones apart on the light ground. At 2'6" by 5'8", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century Baluch prayer rug at Colgate University shows a tree of life, with side panels in designs also found in Saryk Turkmen weaving. A 19th-century Baluch carpet in the Victoria and Albert Museum has two large red medallions shaped like animals with legs, each holding a small tree. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. The formats are small because the looms were portable, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This rug keeps that repeating geometric drawing, with the diamond lattice set in a steady rhythm across the ground. The deep red and near-black shapes sit hard against the beige field, keeping the pattern sharp where the nap survives.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
