Four stylized deer stand among scattered leaves on this delightful rug. Over a near-black field, four stylized deer in deep red and brown stand among lovely scattered leaves of rust, blue and green. A central geometric motif joins the animals in a mirrored layout, with no single medallion dominating the dense drawing. The main border is cream, filled with small red rosettes and leaves, framed by an inner band of deep red and an outer stripe of near-black carrying small colored hooks. The pile is full across the face, keeping the bold animal forms sharp against the near-black ground. It brings a strong graphic note to a small space, the bright rust and blue accents lifting the heavy red and black palette. At 3'3" by 2'2", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
Several generations ago many rugs from the villages around Hamedan were traded through Mosul, and so were known as Mosul rugs. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This accent rug keeps the bold drawing and the strong red and near-black palette found in those longer pieces. The stylized deer and the scattered leaf motifs fill the small field completely, leaving little of the near-black ground visible between the figures.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
