About this rug

This is a lovely rug with small rosettes and curling vines on a gray beige field. The gray beige field carries a sparse repeat of small rosettes and curling vines in dusty rose, faded red and pale teal. No central medallion anchors the design, only this open all-over pattern spread across the length. The gorgeous main border matches the field ground, carrying a simple brown wavy line. Narrow guard stripes echo this same undulating motif on either side. A full antique wash has brought every color to one warmth, none at strength. Pile runs low in spots through the middle, where the foundation shows through. It brings warmth to a passage, letting the soft pink and blue notes stay gentle. At 3'5" by 10'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

Mahal is a trade name and not a town: it covers village carpets from the neighborhood of Arak. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Arak, then called Sultanabad, weaving rugs for its market. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the start. That means a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This runner keeps that generous spacing, letting the ground breathe between the small flowers. The wash takes the soft palette down further, to a single level where the small flowers barely separate from the ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
