About this rug

Diagonal rows of small burgundy boteh repeat along the entire length of this lovely rug. The warm gray field carries a dense lattice of small burgundy boteh motifs, each outlined in navy with touches of cream. There is no central medallion; the pattern repeats across the entire length in diagonal rows. The main border is rust, set with delicate cream palmettes and blue leaves, with a narrow red band of small crosses and a band of sawtooth triangles inside it. Pile runs low across the field, and a pale worn patch shows near one end where the weave has thinned. It holds the eye without overwhelming, letting the rust and navy accents stand out against the neutral ground. At 3'3" by 9'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

By 1913 Arak, then called Sultanabad, had become the center of a great rug industry controlled by Europeans and Americans. Its dyes were said to have perhaps the most extensive color scheme in Persia. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names, and the shared character is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This runner keeps the all-over repeat and neutral ground, using small boteh motifs instead of a curling vine. The rust border brings extra color to the frame, setting bright palmettes against the neutral ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
