About this rug

Lovely loose sprays of red and blue flowers scatter across the cream field of this runner. Loose sprays of red and blue flowers on curling brown vines scatter across the cream field. A narrow diamond medallion with a pink core sits at the center, with a smaller pink lozenge above and below it. Clusters of pretty red, blue and pink flowers fill the four corners of the field. The main border is pink, carrying small red and blue flowers on brown vines. A blue band with a thin red line runs just inside the border. The pile is low in places, and white specks of foundation show through the cream. It anchors a passage, and the cream ground lets the red and blue flowers stay light. At 3'7" by 8', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Kerman rugs

The Wagner garden carpet of the Burrell Collection, made in Kerman under the Safavid dynasty, is the earliest garden carpet outside Asia. In the first half of the 20th century Kerman rugs were sold in the West under the name Kermanshah. Kerman in southeastern Persia worked in the softest palette of the major Persian centers: powder blue, ivory, rose and pale green, often on a pale ground. The drawing is curvilinear and open, with more space left empty than a Kashan or a Tabriz would allow. This runner keeps that pale palette, with cream, rose pink and light blue around the red flowers. Its sprays float on the cream ground, and the pink border and blue band frame them.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
