An all-over pattern in teal, slate blue and dark brown fills this lovely rug. Set in a beige field, upright columns of small flowers, leaf sprays and arrow-shaped stems repeat down the length of the runner. No medallion interrupts the all-over pattern, which is worked in teal, slate blue and dark brown. The main border is cream, carrying dainty slate blue blossoms and small leaves, with guard stripes in teal and near-black on both sides. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. The pile is low in a few spots. Cool blues sit against the warm beige ground. At 3'7" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Known historically as Sultanabad, Arak in central Persia was the center of one of the country’s largest weaving districts. Its all-over floral field and restrained palette are the shared character of the villages around it. This runner follows that character, with small flowers and leaf sprays in blues, teal and brown on a beige ground. The cream border takes up the same blue. Its field reads beige, and the blues stay cool against it.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
