About this rug

Two octagonal medallions, each with a cream core, run along this charming rug. Small geometric flowers, hooked forms and stepped shapes in olive, blue and teal scatter across the beige field. Two splendid octagonal medallions anchor the length, each with a cream core inside a ring of small rosettes, and a dark brown stepped motif sits between them. Pointed lozenges close the field at both ends, edged with a teal zigzag, and olive corners hold small blue and teal forms. The main border is olive, set with blue and cream geometric devices, between narrow guard stripes of cream and dark brown. The pile is low in a few small spots across the field. Blue notes keep the earth-toned beige from fading into the floor. At 3'7" by 10'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

UNESCO records that the women of Fars design, choose the colors and weave without a cartoon, so that no weaver makes two carpets of the same design. In Fars the men shear the sheep in spring or autumn and build the loom, a horizontal frame placed on the ground, while the women spin the yarn. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and rugs sold under its name were woven by the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric, and small stylized animals and birds turn up in the field. This runner keeps that geometric hand, with stepped outlines and hooked forms across the beige ground. Two medallions run along its center, and a dark brown stepped motif is set between them.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
