Boteh in red and dusty rose, with light blue worked through them, make this an amazing rug. Tiny boteh in the paisley leaf-drop shape fill the navy field in a diagonal grid, each set inside a diamond of darker navy lines. Red and dusty rose make up each boteh, with light blue worked through its body and tiny dots scattered between. The grid runs through to both ends, with no medallion to interrupt it and no corner pieces. Two lovely serrated vines of red and salmon leaves frame a pale stripe filled with small triangles and dashes along the border. Navy forms the base of this piece, while rose and salmon add warmth at the edges. At 4'4" by 10'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Arak rugs
In the late 19th century the Ziegler company of Arak, then called Sultanabad, was the biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia. Arak in central Persia, known historically as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The surrounding villages supplied the market under their own names. The shared character of the district is an all-over field and a restrained palette. This runner keeps the all-over plan, a grid of boteh across its whole length. Navy stands against red and salmon here, giving the palette a bolder look than the district’s often restrained one. Because the grid never breaks, the long shape looks like one even surface.

Full care guideReturns
If a rug isn’t right for your space, get in touch within 7 days of delivery (14 days in the European Union) and we’ll help arrange a return or exchange. Because each piece is one of a kind, we handle every return personally.
Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
