About this rug

The near-black field of this charming rug carries three large octagonal medallions. A near-black field with a brown cast, darker than navy, carries three large octagonal medallions, rust-pink at the top and bottom and olive-gold in the middle. Stepped geometric forms and hooked motifs fill the dark ground between them. Each has a cream core. A handsome camel and cream main border displays a chain of angular hooks and small rosettes in brown and near-black. Thin bands of small ovals run along both sides. Pile runs low in spots, and the bare weave appears in isolated areas across the center. Its deep tones suit a tight corridor. At 4'5" by 10'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. Runners and other long formats are common. This piece keeps that geometric character, with sharp stepped outlines and high contrast between the dark ground and the lighter motifs. Three medallions stretch the design along the entire span of the rug instead of a single central focus.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
