About this rug

Pairs of rose red tree forms with comb tops stand on a dark plum ground in the middle of this lovely rug. At the center, pairs of rose red tree forms with comb tops stand on a dark plum ground, and the red against the plum gives the field a burgundy cast. Small teal and tan leaf panels fill each tree, and small animals stand at the roots. A chain of stepped diamonds in teal and pink runs between the pairs, so there is no single medallion. A wide border of rose red and near-black bands carries cream stepped crosses and small teal shapes. Narrow cream and brown stripes edge the field. The pile is low and close across the face. It brings a dark, graphic line to a narrow space, with the rose red trees standing out against the plum. At 4'2" by 9'9", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

Among Baluch weavings prayer rugs are common, with an arch at one end pointing toward Mecca and a field usually filled with the leaves and stems of a stylized tree. The semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan are the source of Baluch weaving. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire, with aubergine, deep madder and indigo so deep it reads as brown. Because the looms were portable, the formats are small, and the designs repeat a handful of motifs carried from camp to camp. This rug keeps that dark ground and the repeating motifs, here pairs of trees and small animals stacked down the length. At 4'2" x 9'9" it is longer than the small formats named above.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
