A dense repeat of brown stars and elongated lozenges marks this lovely rug. Faded red covers the field, filled with a dense repeat of brown stars, elongated lozenges and small H-shaped hooks. No central medallion breaks the pattern, which runs as an all-over repeat down the length. The main border is dark brown, carrying small tan diamonds between narrow tan guard stripes. The pile is low in places, and pale patches near the center show the foundation. It holds a warm line down a hall, and the brown drawing steadies the paler red. At 3'9" by 9', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
A 19th-century rug at Colgate University, attributed to the Bahlul tribal group, repeats diagonal rows of a motif typical of Baluch grain bags. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Baluch rugs come from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. Their palette is the darkest in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The designs repeat a few motifs that traveled between camps. This runner repeats brown stars and lozenges across a faded red ground, inside a dark brown border.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
