About this rug

A herati lattice of rosettes and boteh fills this remarkable rug. The field reads rust at a distance, but up close it is an ivory ground packed with a herati lattice of rosettes and boteh in red, navy and orange. No single medallion anchors the design; the pattern covers the entire length evenly. The gorgeous main border is tan-brown, carrying a graceful scroll of cream and rust palmettes and small blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in red and camel edge this band. The pile has worn low in a few pale patches, near the top and in the lower middle, though the pattern still reads clearly. A cream ground lightens the rust tones in a bright passage. At 3'8" by 9'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Birjand rugs

Under the Safavid dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries Khorasan was a larger province that also took in the cities of Merv and Herat. Travelers of the Safavid era remarked on the fine Khorasan carpets sold in the Persian Gulf port of Hormuz and in one of the main caravansaries of Isfahan. Birjand is the main weaving town of South Khorasan in eastern Persia, and its rugs are finer and more formal than most village work. Expect a repeating floral lattice or a centered medallion in curved lines, on a palette of madder, ivory and deep blue. This runner keeps that repeating floral lattice, worked in curved lines across the whole field. Its palette matches the type: red and ivory with navy, the red strong enough to give the whole rug a rust cast.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
