About this rug

Diamond medallions on cream and blue grounds make this a charming rug. The rust field holds small cream and teal geometric sprays. Three large diamond medallions form a column down the center, the outer two on cream grounds and the middle one on blue. Each medallion holds a stepped core in teal and rust, flanked by hooked arms. The four corners are closed by triangular panels of small repeating motifs. A narrow border carries a small repeating geometric lattice in cream and rust. A few patches have thinned, and white specks show across the field. It suits a passage where the pale diamonds break up the warm red ground. At 3'11" by 9'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Bakhtiari rugs

The Bakhtiari move their flocks 150 miles each year between winter pastures in the plains and summer pastures in the mountains. The 1925 film Grass followed that migration, with the men swimming the Karun River for three days beside rafts buoyed by inflated goatskins. Bakhtiari rugs come from the Zagros mountains of western Persia, and their signature is the garden panel. The field is divided into a grid of compartments, each holding its own tree, vase or flowering plant. This runner keeps the compartment idea in its three stacked diamond medallions, each a self-contained panel on the rust ground. The hooked arms and stepped cores inside each diamond carry the angular geometry of the region. Small geometric sprays fill the open rust field between the medallions.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
