Charcoal gul motifs stand in even columns on this charming rug. A dusty rose field holds a strict grid of charcoal octagonal gul motifs and diamond motifs. There is no central medallion, only the repeating tribal emblem strung in even columns down the length. The beautiful border bands carry rows of small geometric figures in charcoal. Narrow guard stripes run along both sides of the field. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. Worn patches show where the pile has thinned. The dense field of motifs holds the dusty rose and charcoal in a steady line. At 3'7" by 8', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Torkaman rugs
The reds of Turkmen weaving came from madder root, and each tribe had its own gul. Tekke rugs are the most easily identified of the Turkmen, because the quartered gul of their larger carpets became something of a trademark and was often copied elsewhere. Torkaman weavers in northeastern Persia work to a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. Because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. This runner keeps that strict grid of octagonal guls and diamond shapes, worked in charcoal on the dusty rose ground. The charcoal frame of the border holds the whole length together.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
