This lovely rug stacks stepped hexagonal medallions down the length of a terracotta field. Over a terracotta field, stepped hexagonal medallions stack down the length, each holding a handsome four-point star in blue and cream around a small lozenge. Partial medallions close both ends. Cream and tan hooked bands trace each outline, with near-black lines running between them. Angular striped triangles in rust, blue, cream and near-black fill the sides between the medallions. Pile runs low in spots across the face, with white specks of foundation showing. A light antique wash has eased the colors and left the drawing clear. It anchors a narrow passage, and the small blue stars give the terracotta a cool counterpoint. At 3'3" by 7'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

About Shiraz rugs
UNESCO records that the women of Fars design, choose the colors and weave without a cartoon, so that no weaver makes two carpets of the same design. In Fars the men shear the sheep in spring or autumn and build the loom, a horizontal frame placed on the ground, while the women spin the yarn. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and rugs sold under its name were woven by the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric. This runner keeps that geometric drawing in its stepped hexagons and hooked bands. The medallions stagger down the length, single ones in the center with pairs side by side between them, and the terracotta ground carries blue and cream in the stars.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
