About this rug

A wide panel of diamonds beside narrow vertical bands makes this a remarkable rug. A wide panel of terracotta and slate blue diamonds repeats across the near-black field on the left. To the right, narrow vertical bands of chevrons, zigzags and linked rosettes run the full length in terracotta and cream. There is no medallion; the pattern is all bands and diamonds. A band of stepped zigzags and small squares closes each end. Full pile covers the face. Laid in a narrow passage, the dark ground and warm rust accents hold their place. At 3'2" by 7'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Shiraz rugs

UNESCO records that the women of Fars design, choose the colors and weave without a cartoon, so that no weaver makes two carpets of the same design. Shiraz is the market city of Fars province in southern Persia, and rugs sold under its name were woven by the tribal and village weavers of the surrounding country. The drawing is geometric and often asymmetric, and small stylized animals and birds turn up in the field. No two are laid out quite the same way. This runner keeps that geometric directness in its field of diamonds and the bold vertical bands of pattern. The two halves are laid out differently, a diamond field beside striped bands, rather than mirrored.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
