About this rug

This is a charming rug with rows of octagonal gul motifs on a near-black field. Across a near-black field, a shade darker than navy and brown at its edges, rows of octagonal gul motifs repeat in rust red, cream and small touches of blue. Diamond shapes with star centers sit between the larger figures, and small brown marks fill the dark ground. A beautiful camel main border holds black zigzag bands and triangles outlined in red and violet. A narrow guard stripe of small cream flowers on a dark ground separates the border from the field. The pile is low in places, with a worn patch on one field medallion and a few pale flecks. It anchors a tight hallway, and the deep ground steadies the warm rust tones. At 3'1" by 7'6", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Torkaman rugs

The Metropolitan Museum of Art calls its Salor main carpet rare and of unusual beauty, and sees such carpets as the models from which other Turkmen tribes derived their own. Turkmen weavers in northeastern Persia follow a strict repeating grid of gul motifs, one octagonal figure repeated across the field with almost no variation. It sounds austere, but it is the opposite: because the drawing never changes, all the life is in the color. A good Torkaman moves between rust and brick as you cross the room. This runner keeps that strict grid of octagons and diamonds down its length. The near-black ground sets the rust and cream figures hard against the dark, and the camel border opens the frame.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
