A long red hexagonal medallion runs down the middle of the navy field on this wonderful rug. Worked on a navy field, rows of small red lozenges fill the ground around a central column. A long red hexagonal medallion runs down the middle, pinched at the waist. It holds two navy panels of the same lozenge repeat, with small geometric cores at its ends and center. The main border is deep red, carrying cream stepped meanders around small navy panels. Narrow guard stripes with cream dashes and small red shapes edge the border on both sides. Full pile covers the field and the borders, keeping the geometric lines sharp. The dense drawing holds the eye in a narrow space, balancing the strong red against the deep blue ground. At 3'1" by 7'7", it fits an entry, a hallway corner or the space beside a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Azerbaijan rugs
In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. Persian Azerbaijan occupies the northwestern corner of the country. Rather than one style, it holds a family of village traditions that share a vocabulary: angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. This runner keeps that angular vocabulary, with a stepped hexagon and hooked border shapes set in red and navy. The high contrast between the red drawing and the navy ground gives it the strong, graphic character of that tradition.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
