About this rug

Charming red tasseled figures with cream tips sit in rows on the near-black field. Rows of red tasseled figures with cream tips repeat in a dense lattice down the length of a near-black field. No central medallion anchors the design, only this steady all-over pattern, with a small teal eye at the head of each figure. The main border is a band of red, wine red and orange lozenges between cream chevrons on near-black, with a teal and red band inside it. Narrow cream and orange beaded stripes frame it. Full pile covers the rug. The red figures warm the long field, which suits a narrow passage. At 2'11" by 9', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Baluch rugs

In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. A Baluch bride and her mother wove the balisht, a pillow or grain bag that was often part of the dowry, and such bags were usually woven in pairs. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The formats are small because the looms were portable. This runner keeps that deep palette in its reds and teal against the field. The repeating lattice of tasseled figures fills the long format with a steady pattern.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
