Stepped trees and diamond shapes repeat in mirrored columns on this charming rug. On a near-black field, stepped trees and diamond shapes repeat in deep red, rust and copper. There is no central medallion; the pattern runs the length as mirrored columns of geometric forms. The beautiful main border carries small squares in olive and red. Narrow guard stripes with cream triangles and zigzag lines edge the field on both sides. Scattered white specks across the field mark thin spots in the pile. The near-black ground keeps the red from looking loud, making this runner a fit for a narrow passage. At 3'3" by 8'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Baluch rugs
In Afghanistan most Baluch lived until recently in tents or small villages close to the western border. Rugs of the tribal kind, the Baluch among them, are generally small and are woven on horizontal looms laid out on the ground. Baluch weaving comes from the semi-nomadic groups of eastern Persia and western Afghanistan. It has the darkest palette in the Persian repertoire: aubergine, deep madder, and indigo so deep it reads as brown. The designs repeat a handful of motifs carried between camps. This runner repeats stepped trees and diamonds in deep red and copper across the near-black ground.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
