About this rug

Red geometric forms cover the deep indigo field of this delightful rug. The deep indigo field carries a dense repeat of red geometric forms, small hooked figures and scattered rosettes. Red lattice lines enclose small pink and cream diamonds with blue centers across the field. A handsome cream diamond medallion sits at the center, edged in teal around a red core. Red frames the rug, set with brown rosettes and small teal blossoms inside rectangular outlines. A cream guard stripe with leaf motifs in blue, green and red lines the inner edge. The pile is full. It grounds a passage with its indigo weight, letting the red figures warm the cool base. At 2'11" by 8'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Mahal rugs

The biggest exporter of oriental carpets from Persia in the late 19th century was the Ziegler company of Arak, the town then called Sultanabad. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Sultanabad weaving rugs for its market. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the start. That means a wide field and generous spacing between the motifs. This runner shows that spacing in its scattered rosettes and small diamond lattices. Red figures stand clear against the indigo ground, and the single cream medallion marks the center of the long composition.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
