About this rug

A column of seven stepped diamond medallions runs the length of this charming rug. Set within a navy field, a column of seven stepped diamond medallions runs the length of the rug. Each medallion holds a rust red or teal core framed by cream steps, and several cores are worn to brown. Small animals and plant sprigs in cream and rust fill the open ground between them. The handsome border proper is dark navy with small red and cream figures, and a coral red band runs inside it, edged by thin cream dotted lines. Patches through the center are worn down to the foundation, mostly across the medallion cores, and the rest of the pile is full. It holds a steady rhythm in a narrow space, and the cream steps lift the navy. At 2'11" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Lori rugs

Until the early 20th century the tribes of southwestern Persia were mostly nomadic, moving between summer and winter pastures. Lori weaving comes from the Lur people of the western Zagros mountains, and it is tribal work in the proper sense. The rugs were woven on portable looms, in formats that suited a tent rather than a hall. The geometry is bold and slightly loose, and the colors are strong. This runner keeps that bold geometry, stacking seven diamonds down a narrow field. Small animals and plant sprigs fill the ground between them, set loosely.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
