This remarkable rug holds rows of small red boteh on a navy field. Across a navy field, rows of small red boteh repeat in a steady lattice, with no central medallion. The paisley leaf-drop fills the ground from end to end, and the field has no corner pieces. A gorgeous cream main border carries stylized birds, animals and small flowers in red, green and orange. Narrow beaded red stripes and a thin sage line frame it on both sides, and a dark navy edge closes the outside. Full pile covers the face and the borders. It holds a long passage together, and the cream border lightens the dark ground. At 3'7" by 11'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. In 1913 the rugs of its district sold under three names: Sultanabad, Savalan, after a range of mountains to the north, and Mahal. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia, and they were woven large and open from the beginning. The result is a wide field, plenty of space between the motifs, and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. This runner keeps that open feeling, with the boteh set clearly against the dark ground. The border carries birds and animals in place of flowers, a livelier band around the calm field.

Shipping is free and fully insured in the US and Canada. To the UK, the European Union, Australia and New Zealand we ship fully insured, with rates calculated at checkout. Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
