About this rug

A vertical chain of flower heads runs down the center of this wonderful rug. Pretty scrolling vines and flower heads in rose, cream and light blue cover the navy field. A vertical chain of flower heads runs down the center in place of a single medallion. Splendid cream spandrels at each end hold blue scrolls and pink blossoms. The main border is red, set with cream vines and blue blossoms. Narrow guard stripes in light blue with small red triangles edge the border, and a plain navy band closes the outer edge. Full pile runs across the whole face. It grounds a passage in navy and red, with the cream notes keeping the field from feeling heavy. At 3'10" by 10'8", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Arak rugs

Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. The Swiss firm Ziegler began there in the mid-1870s with 40 looms, and by 1894 had 1,200 in the town and 1,500 more in the surrounding villages. Arak in central Persia, once known as Sultanabad, was the center of one of the largest weaving districts in the country. The villages around it sold under their own names, and what they share is an all-over floral field and a restrained palette. This runner has an all-over floral field, with vines and flower heads repeating down the length. The navy ground sets the rose and cream drawing in relief, and the red border carries a line of blue blossoms.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
