Delightful boteh sit in the wide red border among small flowers. Rows of rose palmettes and cream flower heads cross a navy field, linked by ochre zigzag vines in an allover plan that leaves out both medallion and corner pieces. The navy runs deepest at the top end and lifts to a lighter, softer tone lower down. The beautiful red main border is wide and carries boteh, the paisley leaf-drop, among small flowers, framed by ochre guard stripes of small hearts and hooks. The pile stays full across the whole length. It brings depth to a narrow space, with the red border framing the cool navy while the rose and ochre keep the field lively. At 4'3" by 9'10", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Arak was founded only in 1808, as the town of Sultanabad, the name the carpet trade went on using. In 1913 the rugs of its district sold under three names: Sultanabad, Savalan, after a range of mountains to the north, and Mahal. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia. They were woven large and open from the start, with a wide field, generous spacing between the motifs and a palette that leans soft rather than saturated. Here the rows of flowers sit closer, though navy still shows between them, so each row reads on its own. It departs further in color, a saturated red against a deep navy, and in size, a narrow format rather than the large room rug these villages wove.

Orders are processed and shipped within one to four days and most arrive within about ten days, sometimes as fast as three depending on your location, carefully wrapped, with tracking sent the moment your rug leaves us.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
