About this rug

Small hooked marks in red, ochre and cream repeat across the navy field of this amazing rug. Set in a navy field, small hooked marks in red, ochre and cream repeat across the dark ground. Stepped tan outlines divide the field into linked hexagonal cells, with three small diamond medallions at their centers. The middle diamond is pink and coral with a sky blue ring and a graceful orange rosette, and the outer two are navy with a red tree. Coral red panels with stepped edges fill the sides and the ends, scattered with the same hooked marks. A narrow border of thin orange, olive and tan stripes edges the rug. The pile is full throughout, so the small drawing stays crisp. Coral panels warm the deep blue ground, and the rug suits a narrow passage. At 4'1" by 9'6", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Songhor rugs

Songhor lies in Kermanshah province in western Persia, Kurdish weaving country. Around the year 1000 the Kermanshah region was ruled by a Kurdish dynasty, the Hasanwayhids. Older Kurdish rugs of the late 18th and early 19th centuries, among them garden carpets and the harshang design, are known for their exuberant colors. Songhor rugs are geometric, with strong madder reds and deep blues. This rug keeps that geometry, with stepped outlines and hooked marks set against a navy ground. The madder red appears in the coral side panels and the deep blue in the field. Three linked diamonds stand where one central medallion might be.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
