An all-over herati lattice makes this a charming rug. The near-black field is filled with an all-over herati lattice of rosettes, diamonds and curved leaves in red, cream and olive. No central medallion anchors the handsome design; the herati repeat covers the field from end to end. Red is the ground of the main border, with olive vines, cream rosettes and leaves. Guard stripes in cream and slate blue edge the border on each side. The borders hold full pile, and the field runs low in a few spots. Laid in a narrow passage, the red border frames the field while olive and cream notes soften the contrast. At 4'5" by 10'4", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Mahal is a trade name and not a town: it covers village carpets from the neighborhood of Arak. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Arak, then called Sultanabad, weaving rugs for its market. Woven in the villages around Arak in central Persia, Mahal rugs were large and open from the start. They have a wide field and generous spacing between the motifs. This rug sets its lattice out in rows of rosettes and diamonds. The red border frames the field with olive vines and cream rosettes.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
