Diagonal rows of boteh run along the whole length of this remarkable rug. Aubergine carries the field, set with small red and rust boteh, the paisley leaf-drops, touched with teal. The boteh run in diagonal rows along the whole length, and no medallion interrupts them. The main border is tan, with small figures in red, burgundy and green joined by diagonal bands. Guard stripes of red and blue run along each side of it, and a broad near-black band closes the outer edge. Full pile covers the field and the borders. Along a narrow hall, the aubergine ground holds the red and rust together. At 3'10" by 11'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Mahal rugs
Mahal is a trade name and not a town: it covers village carpets from the neighborhood of Arak. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, counted a hundred hamlets and villages within a day’s journey of Arak, then called Sultanabad, weaving rugs for its market. Mahal rugs come from the villages around Arak in central Persia. This runner is a long narrow strip in red, aubergine and tan. Its small boteh are set close in diagonal rows, and a tan border of small figures runs around the field.

Returns & exchangesMade entirely by hand.
Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
