About this rug

Charming boteh figures in red, pink and ochre repeat in rows across the field. Rows of small boteh figures in red, pink and ochre repeat across the field, which reads charcoal from across the room and dark navy up close. There is no medallion, only this all-over pattern of the paisley leaf-drop marching down the length. The gorgeous border sets angular geometric figures in dark blue and red on cream, between terracotta bands. Narrow guard stripes of dark blue carry small rosettes and vine segments on either side. The pile is low in places, and the foundation shows in scattered patches across the face. It anchors a narrow passage, and the warm border frames the dark ground. At 3'3" by 10', it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Botteh rugs

The boteh, mostly known now as the paisley, is an ancient Persian design based on the tree of life and inspired by buds, cones and palm fronds. The shawls of the Scottish town of Paisley were so prominent on the market that the boteh has been called the paisley ever since. Botteh is not a place but a motif: the teardrop with the bent tip that Europe later borrowed and called paisley. Rugs cataloged this way carry the boteh as their organizing figure, repeated across the field in rows. The piece keeps that repeating figure, with the small drops set in diagonal lines across the charcoal ground. Hard geometric angles in terracotta and blue fill the border instead of the soft curves and vines seen across the field.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
