A central column of diamonds sits in the navy field of this lovely rug. Small hooked motifs in red, tan and blue cover the navy field around a central column of diamonds. A large serrated diamond sits at the center with a red core, flanked by smaller lozenges toward each end. The main border is brick red, carrying dainty rosettes in square black frames, and a wide blue band runs outside it. A tan guard stripe with small colored marks lines the inner edge. The pile is worn low across much of the field, and the foundation shows in pale streaks. It anchors a long hall, where the bright red shapes break up the navy ground. At 3'5" by 9'3", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.
Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.
About Hamedan rugs
In the second half of the 12th century the Seljuq sultans made Hamedan their capital, and it remained so for 50 years. The Mongols destroyed Hamedan about 1220 and Timur sacked it in 1386, and the city was partly restored in the 17th century. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner is long and narrow in just that way. The central diamond rises from a stack of smaller diamonds, and a brick red border with a wide blue band frames the whole field.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.
The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
