About this rug

Three diamond medallions down the center of the navy field make this a lovely rug. The navy field is crowded with small rose boteh and ivory blossoms. Three beautiful diamond medallions run down the center; the middle one is ivory, while the outer two have red centers, and slate blue stepped edges outline all three. Rose corner pieces with a stepped slate blue edge sit at the four corners of the field. A narrow tan border carries a graceful wavy vine in red, blue and green, with thin red stripes along it. A few white specks are scattered across the field. The navy ground lets the rose and ivory motifs stand clear in a passage. At 3'6" by 9'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Cyrus the Great took Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, in 550 BCE, and Alexander the Great took it in 330 BCE. Walter Hawley, writing on rugs in 1913, noted that old Hamedan runners sometimes ran twenty feet or more in length. Hamedan is a city and weaving region in western Persia, and hundreds of villages around the city have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long format, with three medallions stacked down a field filled with small boteh. The ivory center stands out against the navy ground.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
