About this rug

Camel and red octagons line the center of the navy field on this remarkable rug. Three large octagonal medallions line the center of the navy field. The top and bottom octagons are camel with a red feathered stem, while the middle one has a red ground with an orange stem. Red and gold hooked forms curl from each octagon, and small pendants join them. The splendid main border is camel, a zigzag of orange and pale blue between two red bands of small dark burgundy flowers. Full pile runs the length of the rug. The navy ground cools the red and camel tones throughout the runner. At 3'3" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. High in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border, sits Ardabil. District weaving is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Long formats and runners are common. This runner has three octagonal medallions with hooked arms, set on a navy ground in camel, red and orange, with a camel zigzag border down each side.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
