About this rug

Angular bird figures appear inside the three large tan hexagons of this charming runner. Three large tan hexagons run down a near-black ground set between burgundy triangles, each holding a stepped core and angular bird figures. The red triangles carry small lattice marks, and delicate stylized birds and a small horned animal stand on the dark ground at the ends. The main border is deep red with a chain of geometric forms in cream, blue and rust. Narrow guard stripes of sawtooth lines in tan and dark red edge the field on both sides. Scattered white flecks and a few thin spots show in the navy field. The tan centers break up the dark ground along this long passage. At 3'9" by 10'2", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Ardabil Carpet in London, made for the shrine of the Safavid shahs at Ardabil, carries the year 946 in its inscription, equivalent to 1539-40. After an earthquake damaged the shrine it was sold to a Manchester firm, and the Victoria and Albert Museum bought it in 1893. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders, strong contrast. Runners and long formats are common. This piece keeps that firm geometry, with the hexagonal forms stacked down the runner instead of a single central shape. The strong contrast holds between the tan centers and the dark ground, while the bird figures add a specific local note to the standard stepped layout.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
