About this rug

Red medallions stand against the navy field of this remarkable rug. The navy field carries a column of large, stepped red medallions with cream and ochre cores running down the center. Splendid angular pendants extend from the top and bottom of each major shape, set against the dark ground. Red geometric brackets stand in the open navy space near the upper and lower corners. A beautiful apricot main border holds red and rust hooked motifs, edged by thin bands of deep red with small rosettes and an outer strip of navy triangles. The pile is full. It grounds a passage, and the deep red shapes stand out clearly against the cool blue background. At 3'8" by 9'11", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Azerbaijan rugs

In 1501 Isma’il Safavi and his Qizilbash warriors took control of Azerbaijan, and in the same year he was crowned the first Safavid shah. The Shahsevan, Turkic nomads of the northwest, carry a name that means those who love the king. Persian Azerbaijan is the northwestern corner of the country. It is less a single style than a family of village traditions with a shared vocabulary of angular medallions, hooked motifs, madder and indigo. The rugs were made for houses in a cold region, not for export catalogs. This runner keeps that angular vocabulary, with the stepped red forms and hooked border motifs set hard against the dark blue ground. The strong contrast between the red forms and the navy is the first thing you see.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
