About this rug

Lovely pink flower heads and small vases sit between two columns of stepped red medallions. Over a near-black field, two columns of stepped red medallions edged in tan run down the length, with pink flower heads and small vases between them. No single center holds the eye: the large medallions have gray brown cores and alternate with smaller diamond medallions on slender tan stems. The main border has a brown ground carrying charming octagonal rosettes in tan, red and pink, joined by red hooked stems. Narrow guard stripes of small red, pink and tan squares edge the border. The pile is full, with a few thin spots near the center of the field. The red drawing stands out against the field in a long passage. At 4'2" by 10'9", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. The famous Ardabil Carpet has a twin, made for the same shrine at Ardabil and kept today in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, near the Azerbaijani border. The weaving of the district is firmly geometric, with stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. This rug has stepped red medallions in two columns and a border of octagonal rosettes on hooked stems. Red and tan stand out hard against the near-black field. The layout stretches the pattern down the length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
