About this rug

A cream star medallion marks the center of this remarkable rug. Small rosettes and hooked vines in red and rose cover the navy field. A cream star medallion with a rose and red core sits at the center. Beautiful red spandrels close the four corners of the field. The wide main border is cream, carrying lovely red and brown flowers on a running vine. Narrow red guard stripes dotted with small cream and brown marks edge it, and a near-black band closes the outer edge. The pile is full. The dense drawing keeps red and navy in step down the length, and the cream border brightens the edges. At 3'7" by 10'7", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Ecbatana, the ancient city under Hamedan, was the capital of Media and later the summer residence of the Achaemenid kings. The physician and philosopher Avicenna died in Hamedan in 1037, and in the 1950s his tomb there was rebuilt as a mausoleum with a museum and a library. Hamedan is a weaving city and region in western Persia, and for generations hundreds of villages around it have sent rugs to its markets. Long narrow formats are a Hamedan specialty, woven for the corridors of local houses, so many of the best vintage runners come from here. This runner keeps that long format. A single cream star sits at the center of the field, with the red drawing spread around it down the whole length.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.

Genuinely vintage

Hand-knotted decades ago, never machine-made.
