About this rug

Five red diamond medallions with cream rosette cores run down the navy-black field of this amazing rug. Five red diamond medallions with cream rosette cores run down a navy-black field, surrounded by dainty scrolling vines in rose, terracotta and tan. The diamonds touch at their points, forming a continuous chain down the center of the runner. No corner pieces break the pattern, as the vine work fills the space between the central column and the edge. A splendid cream main border carries dark floral heads and leaves in red and brown, set between narrow red and black bands. Pile is full over the surface, so the colors read clearly. The dark ground makes the bright red shapes stand out in a narrow passage. At 3'7" by 10'1", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Hamedan rugs

Greek writers credited Deioces, first king of the Medes, with founding Ecbatana around 678 BCE, and modern Hamedan is built partly on the mound that holds its remains. Hamedan is a trade center on the main highway between Tehran and Baghdad, and in the Persian rug trade its rugs rank second only to the carpets of Kerman. Hundreds of villages around the western Persian city of Hamedan have sent rugs to its markets for generations. Hamedan specializes in long narrow formats, woven for the corridors of local houses, which is why so many fine vintage runners come from here. This piece keeps that long format, using a chain of diamonds to lead the eye down the length. Dense flowers fill the dark ground between the diamonds, so the geometric path sits in a soft floral setting.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
