About this rug

Red cartouches with vertical bars surround each of the four stepped medallions on this charming rug. Four stepped medallions in deep red run down a black cherry ground, each built around a splendid red star with small checkered squares at its corners. A pale blue sawtooth edges every medallion, and red cartouches with vertical bars sit around each one, with small fir-shaped leaves scattered over the dark ground between them. The wide main border is gray beige and carries hooked figures in red and pale blue. A red guard band of small cream rosettes frames the whole rug, and a thin bright red guard stripe runs inside the border. The pile is intact from the star centers to the outer band. It anchors a long passage with strong contrast, and the pale border keeps the dark ground from closing in. At 3'10" by 10'5", it fits a hallway or the space along the side of a bed.

Every rug we sell is one of a kind, and this is the only one like it. It is hand-knotted wool pile on a cotton foundation, professionally washed and cleaned before it reaches you, and shipped folded and fully insured. Age-related wear and the small inconsistencies of a handmade weave are part of what these rugs are.

About Ardabil rugs

The Safavid shahs descended from a long line of Sufi shaikhs who kept their headquarters at Ardabil. Ardabil sits high in the northwest of Persia, close to the Azerbaijani border, and weaving there is firmly geometric: stepped medallions, hooked borders and strong contrast. This runner shows all three. Its stepped medallions march down a near-black ground, hooked figures line the wide border, and red set against that dark ground gives the strong contrast the district is known for. Runners and long formats are common there, so the shape is typical as well. What softens the whole is the pale gray beige border, which gives the dark center a calm frame.

The Craft

Made entirely by hand.

Every knot in this rug was tied by hand, one at a time, on an upright loom. A piece like this is the work of two or three weavers sitting side by side for months, wool worked row by row into a pattern carried from memory, its colors softened by decades of light and use. Nothing about it was quick, and no two are ever the same.

The kind of thing that only gets better with age, and quietly passes from one home to the next.
